NATIONAL GREEN HYDROGEN MISSION
About Scheme
Government of India has set ambitious goals of installing 500 GW non-fossil electricity capacity by 2030, becoming an energy independent nation by 2047 and attaining Net Zero by 2070. As India continues to work towards these goals, Green Hydrogen produced from Renewable Energy (RE) has emerged as a promising solution. It is a versatile energy carrier that can replace fossil fuels in hard–to-abate sectors. As a step forward, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Govt. of India has proposed budget allocation of Rs. 19,744 Cr up to 2029-2030 for National Green Hydrogen Mission that aims to make India a ‘global hub’ for using, producing and exporting green hydrogen. By the year 2030, this Mission targets to:
- Development of green hydrogen production capacity of at least 5 MMT (Million Metric Tonne) per annum with an associated renewable energy capacity addition of about 125 GW in the country
- Over Rs. Eight lakh crore in total investments
- Creation of over Six lakh jobs
- Cumulative reduction in fossil fuel imports over Rs. One lakh crore
- Abatement of nearly 50 MMT of annual greenhouse gas emissions
